2205 Stainless Steel Sheet

2205 Stainless steel austenitic - ferritic duplex steel. Application scenarios: marine engineering (offshore platforms, submarine pipelines), seawater desalination equipment, oil and gas extraction and refining facilities, flue gas desulfurization systems, salt chemical / paper bleaching equipment, sewage treatment tanks, high-strength structural components in highly corrosive environments.

Product Details

2205 stainless steel is a duplex stainless steel, also known as UNS S31803 or S32205. Its standard number is ASTM A240/A240M--01. It is mainly used in petrochemicals, marine engineering, chemical ship manufacturing, and heat exchangers, etc. [2-5] Its chemical composition includes 21%-23% chromium, 2.5%-3.5% molybdenum, 4.5%-6.5% nickel, and 0.08%-0.20% nitrogen. It has high strength (yield strength ≥ 450 MPa, tensile strength ≥ 620 MPa), good impact toughness, excellent corrosion resistance (resistance to pitting and stress corrosion), and good welding performance.

The yield strength of 2205 duplex stainless steel is more than twice that of ordinary austenitic stainless steel. This characteristic enables designers to reduce the weight when designing products, making this alloy more cost-effective than 316 and 317L. This alloy is particularly suitable for temperatures ranging from -50°F to +600°F. Applications beyond this temperature range can also consider this alloy, but there are some limitations, especially when used in welded structures. Application fields

· Pressure vessels, high-pressure storage tanks, high-pressure pipelines, heat exchangers (chemical processing industry).

· Oil and gas pipelines, heat exchanger fittings.

· Sewage treatment system.

· Classifiers, bleaching equipment, storage and treatment systems in the paper and papermaking industry.

· Rotating shafts, pressing rollers, blades, impellers, etc. in high-strength and corrosion-resistant environments.

· Cargo boxes for ships or trucks.

· Food processing equipment. Standard

Corrosion resistance

Uniform corrosion

Due to the chromium content (22%), molybdenum (3%) and nitrogen content (0.18%), the corrosion resistance of 2205 is superior to 316L and 317L in most environments.

Local corrosion resistance

The chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen contents in 2205 double-phase stainless steel give it a strong resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in oxidizing and acidic solutions.

Corrosion resistance to stress

The dual-phase microstructure of stainless steel helps to enhance the corrosion resistance of stainless steel to stress corrosion cracking. Under certain conditions of temperature, tensile stress, oxygen and chloride, austenitic stainless steel will undergo chloride stress corrosion. Due to the difficulty in controlling these conditions, the use of 304L, 316L and 317L is limited in this aspect.

Corrosion fatigue resistance

The high strength and corrosion resistance of 2205 double-phase steel make it have a high corrosion fatigue strength. Processing equipment is easily affected by the corrosive environment and loading cycles. The characteristics of 2205 are very suitable for such applications.
